The consultation was very thorough so I felt everything I could tell him was taken into consideration of what my situation, triggers, surrounding bodily issues on my current problem and likely outcomes are, but speaking a tiny bit slower would feel less rushed and as though we were talking over each other now and then. A telephone consultation obviously doesn’t make this easy.

James was always very polite and professional in his manner when he spoke to me. He initially enquired how I was feeling and how my hip was feeling. He then asked how I have managed with the exercises he had given me previously - asking relevant questions to enable him to evaluate how my hip movements were affecting me after carrying out his suggested exercises. I would explain how I had been managing and what difficulties I had had, if any. When giving me any new exercises to carry out, he always checked that I understood what he had explained and I fully understood what exercises I had been given and the regularity of them. James asked to see me in the clinic when he wanted to see how my walking was improving and if I required any further input from him to assist me. James was always patient, understanding and informative, explaining why I may have been noticing further difficulties, or the exercises had been causing me any problems. He would then suggest an alternative to help me achieve better results. I have no complaints of any description about his treatment of me though out the time he has been treating me. I am very pleased with his diagnosis, treatment and explanations. Please pass on my extreme thanks for all his hard work with me and for getting the progress I had originally required.

A physio appointment over the phone is bizarre but necessary during a pandemic and when a person is in severe pain just being able to speak to someone who is prepared to listen and offer assistance is a great comfort. James listened carefully and was very patient when explaining what he wanted me to do. Being slightly deaf made it hard for me understand everything that was said the first time but James calmly and patiently repeated the instructions (more than once) so that I was able to try and move my arm in the direction he wanted. James offered suggestions of alternative therapy (exercise and injections) and explained what was wrong and how long it would take my arm to recover. It was agreed that a video of the exercises would be emailed. This was done the following day, which I failed to see. After a phone call or two James ensured I had the email with the video and details of alternative therapy. James was very patient on the phone, waiting to ensure the email had arrived. The videos are excellent. Very clear to see. I think this is brilliant as I can keep looking at each exercise to see that I am doing them correctly. In person appointments are good but after the appointment when doing the exercises at home it is often easy to forget exactly what you are meant to be doing. These videos are a perfect reminder. This is probably better than in person and written paper instructions. I would suggest that in person appointments (when covid is over) followed by email video exercises would be very useful for most people. Thank you for the care in following up when I was not able to find the email.

Excellent communication skills, friendly, professional, knowledgable, supportive, empathetic, put me at my ease, explained the methods he was using, involved me in the planning of the way forward, provided alternative exercises for me to choose, and aids to help me do the exercises. I have never had such a good/ thorough phsyio.
